Sedam seeks CRPF for security duty

Bangalore Feb. 15. The President of the BJP State unit, Basavaraj Patil Sedam, has urged the Returning Officer for the February 21 byelection from the Kanakapura Lok Sabha constituency to arrange for the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to be posted up even at the hobli level.

Apart from this, every booth should be protected by the CRPF and instructions should be given to maintain strict vigil to ensure free and fair polls.

Such measures had become necessary in the light of the conduct of the JD(S), headed by the former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, and the failure of the police to take action on complaints of impersonation during the elections to the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Council.

Mr. Sedam, and the party's General Secretary, Aravind Limbavali, alleged that JD(S) workers had attacked BJP workers at a meeting addressed by the party leaders, B.S. Yediyurappa and R. Ashok, at Uttarahalli on Thursday night.

In a letter faxed to the Chief Election Commissioner, Mr. Limbavali has said that a group of JD(S) workers headed by M. Krishnappa and "Cable" Raghu had rushed to the stage and removed the microphone and tried to physically assault the two leaders. In the confusion, some BJP workers were injured.

According to Mr. Limbavali, the police, who were supposed to provide security, were mute spectators. He has demanded the arrest of the culprits, and that a warning be issued to Mr. Gowda and other leaders not to indulge in such violence. Besides, he has sought an inquiry into the conduct of the police.
