Science centre to launch awareness programme

HASSAN, JULY 24. The Arsikere Science Centre (ASC) has decided to organise a science awareness programme in the district.

The awareness programme has been organised in view of the initiative taken by the Union Ministry of Science and Technology to educate the people on the importance of developing scientific temperament as part of the "Awareness on Science-2004" programme through the National Board for Science and Technology Communication.

Seminars, exhibitions

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, the district convener of the Arsikere Science Centre, H.R. Swamy, who is also coordinating the programme in the district, said that the Centre would organise seminars, symposiums, exhibitions, lectures, demonstrations, and competitions in various parts of the district. He said that the Centre would implement the programme with the help of the district administration, the Department of Public Instruction, and the District Literacy Committee.

It was planning to create awareness on science among farmers, students, women and labourers by utilising available media resources and would concentrate on literacy, conservation of ecology, and the importance of health and hygiene.

The Centre would also organise exhibitions for school students and conduct lectures on blind beliefs prevalent in rural areas.

A debate competition had been organised on August 12 on the importance of biotechnology, in the Government Pre-University College.

A van exhibiting books on science would visit Hassan, Arkalgud, Holenarsipur, Channarayapatna, Alur and Belur, Mr. Swamy said.
