Samiti threatens demonstration

Staff Correspondent

UDUPI: Yuvajana Jagrithi Samiti, Padubidri, will stage a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Saturday urging the district administration to solve the problems of those who would be displaced after setting up the proposed 1,015-MW Nagarjuna power project.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, president of the Samiti Jitendra Furtado said, the displaced people were to be given compensation for their land at prices decided in 1998 by the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB).

Revised compensation

This was not fair, and the compensation should be revised. The compensation for horticultural crops and houses in the affected areas should also be revised.

The displaced people should be provided jobs at the Nagarjuna power plant.

Since the local people might not have the skills, the Nagarjuna Power Corporation Ltd (NPCL) should start a training centre where these people could be trained to work at the project site, he added.
