Samiti stages dharna for project details

HASSAN, NOV. 29. Members of the Malenadu Janapara Horata Samiti of Sakleshpur staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Monday protesting the "failure" of Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd. (KPCL) to provide details regarding the proposed Gundia High Head Scheme (GHHS).

The president of the samiti, H.A. Kishor Kumar, submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner urging the KPCL authorities to provide details regarding the scheme to allay fears of people of Hongadahalla village in Sakleshpur taluk.

He said KPCL had conducted surveys in the Western Ghats region to implement the scheme.

Meeting

The samiti held a meeting of environmentalists, villagers, elected representatives and ecologists on November 2 at Hongadahalla where KPCL proposed to construct a dam.

The authorities did not attend the meeting despite the samiti's invitation, he said.

The villagers had the right to seek details regarding the scheme according to the Right to Information Act, and they expected the Government to be transparent. In view of this, the samiti expected the authorities to make public the details regarding the scheme. Though the samiti wrote to the Deputy Commissioner in this regard long ago, it did not receive any reply, Mr. Kumar said.

Agitation

He said the samiti would launch an agitation if the authorities ignored the demand of the villagers.
