Remembering Kalinga Rao

BANGALORE Dec. 7. The "Kalinga Rao-90" Smarane Samithi is set to observe the 90th birth anniversary of the pioneer of Kannada light music, the late Kalinga Rao, here on December 13.

The noted music director, C. Ashwath, and the singer, Shimoga Subbanna, told presspersons here today that the name of Kalinga Rao was indelible in the hearts of light-music lovers and the songs he sang were still popular. Besides, he was a major force in infusing interest in light music among the youth.

The Director, Kannada and Culture, Y.K. Muddu Krishna, would inaugurate "Kalinga Rao-90", and the Minister of State for Kannada and Culture, Rani Satish, would participate in the valedictory function, they said. The occasion would be marked by an exhibition of Kalinga Rao's photographs organised by Gowri Sundar of Sundara Prakashana, a seminar, a music competition, and felicitation of Sohan Kumari and Mohan Kumari, wives of the late singer. A number of poets, artists and singers, including Sumatindra Nadig, K.S. Nisar Ahmed, C.R. Simha, and H.R. Leelavathi, would participate in the function, they added.
