SALEM: For the latecomers of the Ammapet Boys Higher Secondary School here, the punishment was to kneel on the pavement in front of the school. But parents and a few activists were highly critical about it.

A bunch of boys, who were studying in the school, were in for a rude shock on Thursday morning when its front gate remained closed. They also found the morning prayers going on the premises.

A teacher came out and told them to kneel on the pavement of Ammapet Main Road where the school was located.

According to a school authority these boys had been coming late for nearly a month despite repeated warnings. "Hence we asked them to kneel down only to inculcate discipline in them," he said.

A parent, however, was critical about this sort of punishment claiming that the wards should be made to understand the values of discipline not in a "rude manner."

When contacted the school headmaster, however, expressed his regret over the incident. He assured that such things would not happen in future and pointed out that the incident that occurred on Thursday was not brought to his notice. "A teacher had taken this decision on his own. When he came to know of this, he immediately permitted them to attend the classes.
