The stretch in Belgaum is known as `Sangolli Rayanna Road'

The proposal was made by the BCC administrator after the actor's death People also call it `Court Road' A new suggestion has been made to rename another road after Rajkumar

Belgaum: The proposal sent by Deputy Commissioner Shalini Rajneesh, who is also the administrator of the Belgaum City Corporation (BCC), to the State Government on naming a road connecting Rani Chennamma Circle and Sangolli Rayanna Circle after the later actor Rajkumar has given rise to discussion here.

Before the sending the proposal neither the BCC administrator nor the Kannada groups, including the admirers of Rajkumar, realised that the decision could lead to such a debate.

According to Belgaum District Kannada Organisations Action Committee president Ashok Chandargi the road between Rani Chennamma and Sangolli Rayanna circles is widely known as "Sangolli Rayanna Road." People also call it "Court Road" in view of the location of the court complex there.

However, there is nothing to prove that the road has been named after Rayanna, except in the records of the LIC's divisional office, which is also located on this road. Since there was a circle (also known as RTO Circle) and it was named after Rayanna, people have been calling the road leading to Rani Chennamma Circle as Sangolli Rayanna Road. None of the senior officials of the BCC was able to clarify whether the road had been named after Rayanna. A proposal to name the road after Rajkumar was sent to the Government soon after the actor's death in April. Sources in the BCC said on Thursday that the Government was yet to approve the proposal.

Raitha Sangha leader Kalyanrao Muchalambi, while welcoming the proposal, said nothing should be done to show disrespect to other legends and celebrities.

Therefore, the administration could choose some other unnamed roads or residential colonies and name them after Rajkumar as "renaming" the Rayanna Road could hurt the sentiments of the people of the district.
