Poojary rules out pre-poll alliance with JD(S)

CHITRADURGA, AUG. 14. The president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, B. Janardhana Poojary, has ruled out a tie-up with the Janata Dal (Secular) in future elections in the State.

Addressing the meeting of the district Congress workers here on Friday, Mr. Poojary said, "As long as I am the party chief, there will not be any pre-poll alliance in any of the coming zilla panchayat, taluk panchayat, or gram panchayat elections. We might have faced a setback, but we will bounce back to power."

He asked the party workers to remain optimistic and contain the differences within the party.

He also claimed that the Congress was still on top as the party had secured 36 per cent of the total votes in the recent elections.

Mr. Poojary objected to the remarks of the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda against the previous Government.

Speaking to presspersons later, Mr. Poojary, however, said that the differences between leaders of the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) were just "teething problems."

He said that both the parties should exercise restraint.

"I am not against inquiry into the allegations made by Mr. Gowda. But, we are, however, opposed to the character assassination of our party leaders," he said. The former MP H. Hanumanthappa; legislators N.Y. Gopala Krishna, G.H. Thippa Reddy, A.V. Umapathy, and D. Sudhakar; the former MLA, M. Chandrappa; the president of the zilla panchayat, Girija Pujari Ningappa; the president of the District Congress Committee, R. Manjunath; and the former president of the Chitradurga City Municipal Council C.T. Krishna Murthy were present.
