Police quell commotion at bank

HUBLI, MARCH 3. Commotion over withdrawal of deposits in Shri Gurusidhheshwar Cooperative Bank led to the intervention of the police on Wednesday.

It all started with the reluctance on the part of the bank, which is under a Government-appointed administrator, to meet the request for withdrawal of deposits. The depositors, who complained that the bank had missed the schedule of repayment last month, were enraged and a virtual free-for-all ensued with the bank officials. The move on the part of a private TV channel to record the development added to the tension, with the bank authorities trying to snatch away the camera. It was at this stage that the police intervened, sent everybody out from the bank premises, and locked it up.
