Police arrest poacher, rescue stag

HUBLI: The Hubli Rural Police rescued a stag from a poacher on Friday. The name of the poacher has been given as Mahadevappa Fakirappa Kolli, a resident of Jigalur in Kundagol taluk.

Police said Mahadevappa was caught near Tirumalakoppa Cross in Kalghatgi Taluk, when he was allegedly trying to transport the stag.

Police said Mahadevappa used to allegedly hunt the stags in and around Kadapatti and Kalghatgi forest areas with the help of hounds and sell them in Hubli.

Each stag used to fetch him anywhere between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 20,000, they said.

Acting on a tip off, S.M. Sandigwad, Inspector, Hubli Rural Police, and members of the Forest Vigilance Squad nabbed the poacher and rescued the three-year-old stag. A case has been registered at the Hubli Rural Police station.
