Police accused of working for Congress

CHITRADURGA, APRIL 24. G.S. Manjunath, Janata Dal (Secular)-backed independent contesting the elections from the Holalkere Assembly Constituency, has taken exception to the alleged "high handedness" of the district police during the election in the district.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Manjunath alleged that some policemen had sided the Congress candidate, A.V. Umapathy.

He accused the police of working like "agents" of the Congress in the constituency. He charged Mr. Umapathy and his men with trying to rig the election.

Two police officers, who were natives of Holalkere taluk but posted elsewhere, were present at Holalkere during the election, Mr. Manjunath alleged and added that a complaint had been registered in this regard.

"I had provided a list of sensitive and hypersensitive booths to the district administration. But steps were not taken to strengthen security even at vulnerable polling stations," he said.
