Philately exhibition on November 19, 20

DAVANGERE: The Postal Department, Chitradurga division, is organising a divisional-level philately exhibition, "Davanadurgapex-2005," on November 19 and 20 here. Over 100 philatelists who will participate in the contest will exhibit over 20,000 stamps of antique value.

G. Eshwarappa, Superintendent, Chitradurga division, told presspersons here on Monday that philatelists from Chitradurga and Davangere districts can take part in the event. The department has also invited some noted philatelists from other places, he added.

Philately, which is known as the king of hobbies, is an expensive hobby, he said and added that the market value of an old stamp called "Sind Ghat" is Rs. 32 lakhs. The department will release stamps on the historical Chitradurga fort and noted writer Bee. Chi. on the occasion, he added.

Competitions

The department has also organised debate, essay writing, painting and quiz competitions for schoolchildren to mark the occasion, he said. Schools have been told to conduct the competitions and send the list of winners. They will take part in the national-level competition, and will be given cash awards, he added. The topic for the painting competition are "My favourite mythological Hero" and "My favourite fairy tale."

The topic for the essay competition is "The role of the Postal Department in serving rural and weaker sections of society." In the letter writing competition, students will be asked to write a letter to their friend on "Stamp collection" or "Exhibition of stamps."

Philately clubs

The department is planning to set up "Nehru philately clubs" exclusively for children to inculcate the habit of stamp collection among them, Mr. Eshwarappa said.
