Palm cultivation to be promoted in State

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: The Minister for Horticulture, Alangoor Srinivas, said here on Saturday that the Government will introduce an Act for the comprehensive development of palm crop in the State.

He was speaking after giving away awards to palm cultivators who obtained the highest yield per hectare, at Alaganchi village in Nanjangud taluk. The Minister said the Act will be introduced shortly and will provide for the all-round promotion of the crop. It will help cultivators secure better remuneration and meet the growing demand for the crop in the market.

Subsidies

Mr. Srinivas said that the Government will also extend subsidies to palm growers for the first four years at the rate of Rs. 15,500 per hectare and extend 50 per cent concession for providing power connections to irrigation pumpsets, installation of submersible pumpsets and the like. This will encourage farmers to take up palm cultivation on a larger scale. Palm saplings will be given away to farmers at a concessional rate while farmers opting for drip irrigation facilities will be encouraged and given a subsidy of 30 per cent to 50 per cent, Mr. Srinivas said.

The Government also has plans to extend 50 per cent subsidy for the purchase of diesel pumpsets, diesel generators, harvesting machines and plant pruning machines. Mr. Srinivas said there is a proposal to arrange for loans from financial institutions.

These measures will ensure that the yield per hectare increases and more number of farmers take up the cultivation of palm crop, Mr. Srinivas said.

He asked farmers to try and secure a yield of at least 25 tonnes to 30 tonnes a hectare. "This will not only improve the economic conditions of farmers, but will also help increase foreign exchange," he said.

The Minister gave away awards to 30 farmers from the State for securing the highest yield per hectare. Farmers sought a rational procurement price for the crop. The Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, H.C. Mahadevappa, presided over the function.
