`Outcome of bypoll will affect Govt.'s stability'

GULBARGA, OCT. 7. S. Bangarappa, MP, said today that the outcome of the Bidar Lok Sabha byelection would have a telling impact on the future of the Congress-Janata Dal (S) coalition Government in the State.

Addressing a press conference here, the former Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader said "internal contradictions" of the Congress and the Janata Dal (S) would take a different turn after the announcement of the result of the bypoll.

Asked whether he was predicting the fall of the Government, he said: "The Government may not last for long.''

The Bidar byelection had widened "the rift" between the two coalition partners and exposed "serious differences" between them, he said.

He said both the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular), which had fought against each other in the last Assembly elections, had made known that they would contest against each other in the coming election to panchayat raj institutions and local bodies. "This sort of love-hate relation will not last long and is bound to collapse soon,'' he added.

Mr. Bangarappa said the ruling parties could not come to an agreement on several major issues, including the long overdue Cabinet expansion.
