Officials told to supply seeds to farmers on time

BELGAUM, JUNE 1. The Belgaum Zilla Panchayat, which meet here on Monday, witnessed noisy scenes with members of the Opposition complaining about the alleged irregularities in supply of seeds to farmers.

Responding to the allegations, the President of the zilla panchayat, N.F. Doddagoudar, instructed the officials of the Department of Agriculture to take steps to ensure timely distribution of seeds to the farmers. Following pre-monsoon showers in some parts of the district, farmers had started sowing operations. There should be no delay in the supply of seeds, he said. However, the authorities concerned maintained that seeds were being distributed through the Raitha Samparka Kendras. Also, sub-centres had been opened in the taluks to supply seeds to farmers, they added. The zilla panchayat members also urged Mr. Doddagoudar to take steps to expedite work on drinking water projects taken up under the Jal Nirmal scheme with World Bank assistance.
