D.V. Sadananda Gowda to concentrate on strengthening the party

MANGALORE: The president-designate of the State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), D.V. Sadananda Gowda, has said that the new assignment is an opportunity as well as a challenge to strengthen the party in the State.

Addressing presspersons at Sanghaniketan, the regional headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, here on Saturday, Mr. Gowda said that so far he has used all opportunities that came to him for the welfare of the party.

The new assignment is a challenge as the BJP is in power in the State, which is a first for the party in South India. As President of one of the parties in the coalition government he has to expand the party base in the State, and he will lay special emphasis on that.

Referring to the naxalite problem in some parts of the Western Ghats in the State, he said this is a result of the failure of political parties to address the problems of the people living in the region.

To a query on why the BJP is supporting Rajiv Chandrashekar, an industrialist who is not a Kannadiga, in the Rajya Sabha elections instead of a Kannadiga, he said U.R. Ananthamurthy had not approached the party seeking its support. The party is supporting the candidate who first approached it.
