Neera agitation to be launched again

CHAMARAJANAGAR, AUG. 21. Bhakthi Tirtha, president of Karnataka State Gajanan Naik Khadi and Village Industries Association, has said he will start a padayatra from Vittenahalli in Channapatna taluk to the Vidhana Soudha on October 2 (Gandhi Jayanthi) along with farmers to encourage them to restart the neera agitation.

Addressing a press conference here today, Swami Bhatki Tirtha said the Government had given oral permission to the farmers to tap neera from coconut palms. But a Government Order had not been passed. Hence, it was inevitable for the farmers to start the agitation again.

Swami Bhakti Tirtha demanded that the Government form a Board for the development of neera and panebella (jaggery) products.

The Government should withdraw the cases filed against farmers during the agitation, he added.
