MP seeks probe into crop insurance imbroglio

HUBLI: Pralhad Joshi, Member of Parliament, on Saturday urged the Government to order an inquiry into the crop insurance imbroglio.

He told presspersons that an expert committee should be set up for the purpose.

Mr. Joshi alleged that some persons with vested interests are planning to scrap the scheme. Efforts are being made in this regard, he said.

He alleged that farmers are being charged high rates of premium for the crop insurance. Those who avail themselves of crop loans almost end up paying more than Rs. 4,000 for getting a compensation of Rs. 13,000, because crop insurance has been made mandatory for them, he said.

The Agricultural Insurance Corporation (AIC) has fixed high rates of premiums and the State-level crop insurance committee is doing nothing to safeguard the interests of poor farmers, he said.

The AIC has already been told about these discrepancies and the officials have sought some time. If no action is taken to set things right, members of Bharatiya Janata Party, under the aegis of the Kisan Morcha of the party, will lay seize to the AIC office in Bangalore, he said.

Datta Dorle, President, Hubli-Dharwad mahanagara zilla unit of BJP, said that since the four Ministers from the undivided Dharwad district have failed in getting the Rs. 176-crore project for improving the drinking water supply in the twin cities sanctioned, the Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to gherao them. The party members will stage a black flag protest at each of the functions in the twin cities in which these Ministers take part, he said.

Mr. Joshi alleged that the Ministers were putting the blame on each other instead of making concerted effort to get the project sanctioned.

He said that the 11 MLAs representing the constituencies in the Malaprabha basin would raise the issue of Kalasa-Banduri Nala project in the Assembly.

Lingaraj Patil, president of the party's Dharwad district rural unit, Gangadhar Patil Kulkarni, State Executive Committee member of the BJP Kisan Morcha, were present at the press conference.
