Wards reorganisation in progress in Davangere

DAVANGERE: The Davangere district Congress unit has alleged that S.A. Ravindranath, Minister for Sugar and district in-charge, and Siddeshwar, Davangere MP, are interfering in the reorganisation of wards of the Davangere City Municipal Council which would be given the status of a corporation soon.

D. Basavaraj, general secretary of the Congress and former municipal president, told presspersons here on Monday that the Minister and MP had been interfering in the reorganisation process with an ulterior motive of winning more seats in the civic body elections. He alleged that they were trying to ensure reservation of seats to wards to suit their candidates. He said the BJP had been trying to assume power in the corporation by any means.

Mr. Basavaraj appealed to the authorities concerned to ensure that the reorganisation was done in a fair way without yielding to pressure either from the Minister or from the MP. He said it was unethical to mount pressure on officers in matters such as this.

Mr. Basavaraj said that interference by the BJP and the Janata Dal (S) in the reorganisation of wards was not only noticed in Davangere but also elsewhere. He alleged that the two parties, which had formed the coalition Government, were manipulating the process in a move to come to power in the local bodies. The coalition Government, he alleged, was not in favour of holding elections to the local bodies fearing that it might suffer another defeat. He said the Congress would not hesitate to move the court if the Government failed to take steps to hold elections to the civic bodies.

Mr. Basavaraj claimed that the Congress had done remarkable work in Davangere city in its regime in the last five years and hoped that people would support the party in the next elections too.
