Mangalore Police bust drug racket

MANGALORE, FEB. 26. The Mangalore Police have busted a drug racket reportedly active in the interior areas of Goa and seized heroin worth Rs. 1 crore. The Deputy Superintendent of Police (Mangalore sub-division), Shankar Mantoor, told a press conference here today that acting on a tip-off, Venkatesh Prasanna, police inspector, and his men apprehended Vaman Bhat, an engineering student, at Attavar in Mangalore and recovered five grams of heroin from him on Tuesday. The same evening, they took into custody Arun Raj on the charge of supplying heroin to Vaman Bhat, he added.

Mr. Mantoor said that based on the information given by Vaman Bhat and Arun Raj, the police went to Calangute in Goa where they disguised themselves as customers and met Noel D'Souza and Edwin Miranda at Calangute Beach. But when the two tried to escape, the police team apprehended them with the help of Goa Police. The two had been produced before the magistrate, who remanded them in judicial custody for a week.
