Escoms to set up local dispatch centres to regulate power supply

MANGALORE: Electricity Supply Companies (Escoms) in Karnataka will soon monitor power loads in their jurisdiction through area load dispatch centres (ALDC). While the work on the ALDC of the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company is nearing completion, work on the centre of the Hubli Escom is presently under way.

The ALDC of the Mangalore Escom will be completed by January 2009. The company has placed an order for the required equipment.

Sources in the State power sector told The Hindu on Sunday that at present, the task of monitoring the load for Karnataka was being taken up by the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC), Bangalore.

The LDC presently takes minute-to-minute decisions on inter-state power draws. It instructs the various Escoms regarding their respective power allocation. It also monitors intra-State power usage and looks after power draws from the central grid.

The sources said that once the ALDCs were commissioned, the SLDC would still make the power allocation to the respective Escoms. It would be the duty of the ALDCs to monitor the loads and stick to their power allocation in accordance with directions given by the SLDC. The SLDC will then concentrate on power draws from the southern and central grids and maintaining overall grid discipline, they added.

The SLDC at Bangalore is being managed by the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd.
