‘KPL will showcase local talent’

HASSAN: The Karnataka Premier League (KPL) has provided a good platform for players to showcase their talent and earn a place in the Ranji and national teams, chief executive officer of Malnad Gladiators (owned by former Minister Jayaprakash Hegde), said.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, Mr. Prakash said earlier banks and other institutions encouraged sportspersons by giving them jobs, but as the practice had been discontinued, auctioning of players had become necessary for their financial security.

Mr. Prakash also announced that Malnad Gladiators was selecting talented players from the franchisee districts of Hassan, Shimoga and Chikmagalur. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) had given the franchise the names of 48 players from which they had been asked to select 22 players, he said.

At present, they had selected seven players, including one wicketkeeper, three batsmen, two bowlers and one all-rounder. They would spend Rs. 22 lakh on auctions and the maximum bid would be Rs. 7 lakh, he said.

Mr. Prakash said a Jayaprakash Hegde Trophy tournament would be conducted every year in these districts to identify good players for training.

Mr. Prakash also clarified that there were no differences between the KPL and the KSCA, and the latter had come forward to publicise the KPL.

He also announced that tournaments would be conducted in the 23 sports clubs in Hassan from next year to identify good talent.

Malnad Gladiators captain Ryan Ninan, coach R. Arun Kumar, manager L. Prashanth and senior cricketer Suresh were present.
