SHIMOGA: The Railway budget presented by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee was hailed as a “bonanza” as far as the sanction of new railway facilities in Shimoga district is concerned here on Wednesday .

What has come as a pleasant surprise for the people of the region is the sanction of an Inter-City train between Shimoga and Mysore.

This was in the list of demands submitted to the Railway Ministry.

Shimoga MP B.Y. Raghavendra has hailed the new Railway budget as positive and forward-looking.

He has thanked the Railway Minister and Minister of State for Railways K.H. Muniyappa for accepting the major demands of the region, including the introduction of new rail lines between Shimoga and Harihar and Shimoga and Mangalore via Ramagundam.

He said that he was happy to note that the Railways had responded favourably to the suggestion made by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa to take up new railway projects in Karnataka under public-private partnership (PPP) arrangement.

He said that the doubling of the track between Arsikere and Birur as sanctioned in the budget will go a long way in improving train movement in the section.

M. Bharadwaj of Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) said that it was, perhaps, for the first time that Shimoga district had been able to get its due share in the Railways going by the new projects sanctioned in the new budget for it. He thanked Ms. Banerjee and Mr. Muniyappa for introducing the new projects.
