‘ICGS Vijit' all set to join Coast Guard tomorrow

FOR MARITIME PATROL: ‘Vijit', an Offshore Patrol Vessel developed by Goa Shipyard Ltd. for the Coast Guard, will be commissioned on Saturday.

“ICGS Vijit”, the second of the new class of Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV), indigenously designed in house and built by Goa Shipyard Ltd.(GSL), will be commissioned into the Coast Guard by M.M. Pallam Raju, Minister of State for Defence, on Saturday in Vasco-Da-Gama.

The OPV will join the fleet after commissioning and would be deployed extensively for safety of the nation's maritime zones and offshore assets.

This is the second OPV being delivered by Goa Shipyard Ltd. in nine months. The first vessel ICGS “Vishwast” was commissioned on March 17, said a spokesman of GSL here on Thursday. The commissioning of “Vijit” comes on the heels of the launching of 105-metre Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel on Monday.

This state-of-the-art OPV has an Integrated Bridge System (IBS) equipped with a contemporary navigation and communication equipment and is provided with a Platform Management System. Propelled by two MTU engines, this vessel is capable of 26 knots and an endurance of 4,500 nautical miles. The vessel is equipped with a 30mm gun to counter undesirable intruders and is fitted out for helicopter operation.

IT is the only vessel of this class in the world with the large range of capabilities for pollution control, fire fighting, search and rescue, surveillance and patrol provided in a 90-metre vessel, said the spokesman.

GSL had earlier built 105-metre Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel (AOPV) for the Coast Guard. It has developed five variants of patrol vessels ranging from 50 metres to 105 metres and with speeds ranging from 25 knots to 35 knots.

The GSL is developing the designs for ships of 75 metres and 115 metres length for varied applications, the spokesman said.

The GSL has built 188 ships, including OPVs, missile craft, survey vessels, sail training ship, FPVs, extra fast attach craft, offshore supply vessels and over 100 glass reinforced plastic fast interceptor boasts for the nation.
