KARNATAKA

‘Home Minister must go’

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: The All India Christian Council has demanded the resignation of Home Minister V.S. Acharya over the attacks against Christians in Karnataka, a State that is “fast slipping into the morass of communal anarchy.”

“The State Government must take full responsibility for the attacks on Christians in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Orissa and suspend senior civil service officers of the affected districts,” said John Dayal, council secretary-general.

Between August 24 and October 2, as many as 22 churches have been attacked in Karnataka and 20 people injured in these attacks, he said. In Orissa, 57 people have been killed, 4,300 houses burnt and 50,000 people rendered homeless. Mr. Dayal added that the violence against Christians in Orissa affected not just the community but posed a threat to national security.

On October 6, the Bangalore Citizen’s Initiative will organise a rally and public meeting to condemn communal violence. It will begin at the Government Arts College and end at Jakkarayanakere Ground near Seshadripuram.
