‘Farmers being cheated’

Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE: The Davangere unit of the Janata Dal (Secular) has strongly criticised the district administration for collecting transportation and labour charges from farmers while shifting maize procured. Its leaders have said that it is the responsibility of the administration to transport the maize to warehouses. Speaking to presspersons here on Sunday, Sathish Koolenahalli, president of the district Janata Dal (S), said the authorities had collected an amount of Rs. 13 a quintal of maize as transportation charges and Rs. 10 a quintal as labour charges from the farmers. He said that after the purchase of maize, the farmers had no more obligations to fulfil. The district administration should have transported the maize to the warehouses, but that had not been done.

Contract

Mr. Koolenahalli alleged that the district administration had given out a contract to a private agency to transport the maize to warehouses and had hence levied labour charges which it had to recover. He said crores of rupees would hereby be collected from the farmers, leaving them helpless.

He demanded that the Government institute a judicial inquiry into the procurement of maize in Davangere and alleged that even in other aspects such as measurement of maize, farmers were being cheated.
