Depute an engineer exclusively to monitor work: advocates

DHARWAD: Advocates staged a dharna here on Saturday over the alleged delay by officials of the Public Works Department in completing work on the building to house a Circuit Bench of the Karnataka High Court.

The building is coming up on the premises of the Water and Land Management Institute near Dharwad. The Circuit Bench is scheduled to start functioning from July 7.

Members of the Dharwad Bar Association, led by its president B.D. Hiremath, had gone to the office of the Chief Engineer of the PWD here on Saturday in the wake of doubts being raised over the completion of work on the building before July 7.

As the Chief Engineer was out of station, they met the official in-charge and sought details about the arrangements being made by the department for early completion of the work. They demanded that an engineer be deputed exclusively to monitor the work on the building. The official allegedly behaved arrogantly with the advocates, and this led to an altercation between Mr. Hiremath and the official.

Later, Mr. Hiremath and other advocates staged a dharna at the office of the Chief Engineer and sought an explanation on why the officials were insisting on changing the design of the entrance of Circuit Bench building, which, they said, would further delay the completion of the work.

Chief Engineer Rudraiah spoke to Mr. Hiremath over phone from Bangalore and assured him that he would meet the association members with details regarding the Circuit Bench building on Monday.

Consequently, the advocates ended their dharna.

Later, Mr. Hiremath told presspersons that their only demand was that the PWD officials should ensure that the construction was completed at the earliest by deputing an engineer exclusively to monitor the work.
