DHARWAD: The usually calm surroundings of the Karnatak University were transformed into a noisy place on Sunday thanks to the “Auto Cross-09”, a cross-country race for two-wheelers.

Youngsters riding their motorcycles at full speed were seen on the usually deserted roads on the university campus. It was noon by the time the event, organised by Phoenix Crew Social Club, began at the specially created dirt track next to the “natural stadium” of the university.

But the hot sun and dust did not dampen the sprits of the large number of people who had gathered at the venue to watch the thrilling show. Volunteers had a difficult time controlling the spectators from coming too close to the racing track.

In all, 28 motorcyclists from Hubli and Dharwad took part in the event in which competitions were held in five categories — Local Boys, Indian Open, 4-stroke Engine, Phoenix Special and Expert Class.

President of the club Sudhir Khshatri gave away the “Special prize for the freshers” to Sarfaraz and “Best rider of the day” prize to Tanveer who won in three categories and came second in one.

All the winners were given cash prizes and trophies.
