Kurubara sangha plans rally for rebuilding Kanaka Gopura

BIDAR, NOV. 29. The Karnataka Pradesh Kurubara Sangha will organise a "Bangalore Chalo'' rally on December 27 seeking reconstruction of the recently demolished Kanaka Gopura on the Udupi Krishna Temple premises.

Speaking at the 517th birth anniversary celebrations of Kanaka Dasa, the sangha's working president, Raghunath Malkapure, said two-lakh people from across the State were expected to participate in the rally.

Some people were trying to insult the Kuruba community by demolishing the gopura, he alleged.

The Janata Dal (Secular) district unit President, Amrit Chimkod, demanded that the State Government treat the Kuruba community on par with the Gond community, which came under the Scheduled Tribes category.

He urged the Government to pressure the Union Government to declare the Kuruba and Gond communities as one.

A State Cabinet resolution of 1996 considering Kuruba and Gond as synonyms was pending before the Union Government.

This should be cleared at the earliest, he said.

The Deputy Commissioner, T.K. Anil Kumar, called for popularising Kanaka Dasa's works. The MLA, Bandeppa Kashempur, spoke.
