Krishi Mela in Hassan from today

HASSAN: Enthused by the success of Arogya Mela, the district in-charge and Minister for Public Works, H.D. Revanna, has taken the initiative for a two-day district-level Krishi Mela in Hassan from Sunday.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, Mr. Revanna said that the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, will inaugurate the "Agriculture and agriculture-based industries fair" organised by the district administration, the zilla panchayat, and the Departments of Agriculture, Watershed Development, Forest, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Industries, Sericulture, Fisheries, Cooperative, and Agricultural Marketing, Hassan Milk Union Ltd., and several banks.

The former Prime Minister and Hassan MP, H.D. Deve Gowda, will inaugurate the fair and exhibition, and Hassan MLA, H.S. Prakash, will preside over the function to be held in the Government Pre-University College grounds. The Ministers for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Sericulture, Information, and Horticulture, will participate in the inaugural programme.

Mr. Revanna said that he will deliver the valedictory address on Monday and the Minister for Information, B. Shivaram, will be the chief guest. The MLAs representing the eight constituencies and the presidents of the zilla, taluk, and gram panchayats will also participate, he added.

The Minister said that around 8,000 farmers from various parts of the district are expected to participate in the fair. Farmers who attend the fair will be given an information kit, which contains brochures on agriculture and related activities.

Besides modern and traditional farming systems, the mela will focus on various connected activities such as fisheries, animal husbandry, sericulture, water conservation, horticulture, social forestry, and agriculture marketing, which will be beneficial for their economic uplift. A screen measuring 100 x 40 has been fixed in the college grounds, he added.

Noted scientists from Central Research Training Institute, Krishi Vijnana Kendra, and the veterinary and agricultural universities will participate.

Mr. Revanna said that the heads of several government departments will guide the farmers on the schemes announced for their benefit. Representatives of various banks will educate the farmers on credit policy, loans, benefits of prompt repayment, and other facilities.

He appealed to farmers to make use of the opportunity and hoped that they would gain confidence from the mela. Coffee, pepper, and cardamom growers from the Malnad districts will also participate and representatives of the Spice Board will be present to guide them on the problems faced by them owing to the fall in prices, he added.

The chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat, F.R. Jamaadar, there are around 4.5 lakh farmers in the district and 95,000 agriculture labourers. Of 2.5 lakh hectares of crop area in the district, the irrigated area is 1.73 lakh hectares, he said.
