Kannada activists stage protest

DAVANGERE: Members of various Kannada organisations, including the Kannada Hitharakshana Vedike and Kannda Sene, staged "urulu seve" from the municipality office to Gandhi Circle here on Monday in protest against the burning of the Kannda flag in Belgaum recently.

The protesters, while condemning the resolution of the Belgaum City Corporation seeking the transfer of Belgaum and other Marathi-speaking areas to Maharashtra, demanded that Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh take steps to supersede the Belgaum City Corporation and direct the Police Department to withdraw cases against the Kannada activists arrested in Bangalore.

They also sought booking of cases against those who burned the Kannada flags, and urged the Government to "extradite" councillors who signed the resolution.

They submitted a memorandum to the Government in which they said Belgaum is an integral part of Karnataka, and the sentiments of Kannadigas should not be hurt by reviving the border row.
