JD(U), AIPJD dharnas mark Emergency

Bangalore June 26. The Janata Dal (United) and the All-India Progressive Janata Dal today staged dharnas in two different places to mark the 28th anniversary of the Emergency.

The former Home Minister and JD(U) leader, P.G.R. Sindhia who was imprisoned during the Emergency, called upon all factions of the JD to unite and provide a viable alternative to the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. It would be one of the best ways to pay homage to the late Jayaprakash Narayan, he added.

Addressing participants at the JD(U) dharna near the Mahatma Gandhi statue, he said the Emergency had prompted all leading Opposition parties of the day to unite and form the erstwhile Janata Party. He felt there was a need for them to come together again given the present circumstances, particularly in the State.

The freedom fighter, H.S. Doreswamy, criticised "misrule" by the S.M. Krishna Government. Efforts should be made to forge the unity of the JD factions, and ensure that there was a united Janata Parivar prior to the next elections, he said.

The President of the State unit of the JD(U), N. Thippanna, recalled the strength of the erstwhile Janata Dal, and said the JD(U) was committed to the unity of secular forces.

A small group of AIPJD activists staged a dharna near the Mahatma Gandhi statue on Race Course Road.
