`Issue coin with Basaveshwara's image'

SHIMOGA, JULY 24. The Malenadu Nanya Sangrahakarara Sangha has urged the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, to direct the Reserve Bank of India to issue coins bearing the image of the 12th Century social reformer, Basaveshwara.

In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, Tushar Girinath, here on Saturday, the sangha said the Centre should pay tribute to the social and religious contribution of Basaveshwara by releasing coins with his image.

Copies of the memorandum were presented to the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, D.H. Shankaramurthy, and the Shimoga MLA, K.S. Eshwarappa, who promised that the matter would be taken up with the authorities concerned.

The delegation comprised Devadas Naik, president of the sangha, D.H. Subbanna, K.P. Dattatreya, S. Chandrakanth, and H.V. Panchaksharappa.
