Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE: Jambagi Sharanappa, tax consultant and former president of the Davangere City Municipal Council, on Thursday said only about 3.5 crore people of the entire population were paying tax.

Most of the others were evading tax and some were reluctant to pay taxes, he said.

Participating in a function to inaugurate the Income Tax help centre here, Mr. Sharanappa said it was the duty of all those who earned an income except the poor to pay the stipulated tax in accordance with their income.

Evading tax was a crime, he said and called upon the people to share the burden of the country by paying tax promptly.

Mohammed Ghouse, Income Tax officer, said the help centre had been established to help small and marginal taxpayers in paying their taxes.
