Gulbarga journalists to stage dharna

GULBARGA, FEB. 26. Journalists in Gulbarga city have decided to stage a dharna in front of the office of the Superintendent of Police on Friday and go on an indefinite relay hunger strike two days later. They are demanding the arrest of those involved in the attack on a journalist, Mallaiah Guttedar, of Bagalkot News, in Hunasigi town in Surpur taluk on Sunday last.

Addressing a press conference here, the President of the district unit of the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists, P.M. Mannur, criticised the statement of the Superintendent of Police, K. Ramachandra Rao, lauding the Sub-Inspector of Police of the Hunasigi Police Station for his handling the issue.

Mr. Mannur claimed that the statement of the Superintendent of Police amounted to hiding the failures of the police officer concerned in handling the incident and pointed out that the victim, Mr. Guttedar, had, on February 2, lodged complaint with the Hunasigi Police apprehending a threat to his life from the accused person and his supporters over a report on the alleged encroachment of land belonging to the Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam by the accused person.

However, the police officer concerned had failed to act on the complaint.
