Govt. urged to strengthen panchayat raj institutions

Staff Correspondent

BELGAUM: The government should strengthen the hands of elected members of panchayat raj institutions instead of giving more powers to the bureaucracy in general and the Chief Executive Officers of zilla panchayats in particular, said S.F. Doddagoudar, President of Belgaum Zilla Panchayat.

Addressing presspersons on the last day of his 20-month term in the office, he said the Government in the past amended the Panchayat Raj Act and ensured greater powers to CEOs by withdrawing certain powers from the zilla panchayat president defeating the purpose of decentralisation of power.

He said all the panchayat members have been demanding more powers to all the three tiers of the panchayat raj institutions for long.

Stating that he was not satisfied with his performance, Mr. Doddagoudar said he could have done better if there had been no elections in the State during last 20 months.
