Goa Assembly session on Friday

Staff Correspondent

PANAJI: A one-day session of the Goa Assembly will be held on Friday to elect the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker. A decision to this effect was taken at the cabinet meeting held here this afternoon.

The Chief Minister, Pratapsinh Rane, said the Cabinet has decided to have the budget session in August. He said the vote on account obtained in the Parliament when Goa was under the President's Rule would expire by August end and the budget would be passed in the Assembly before the deadline.

The post of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker became vacant after Vishwas Satarkar and Narahari Haldankar made an exit from their respective posts on March 2 to prevent Mr. Rane from proving his strength on the floor of the House. Before announcing his resignation, Mr. Satarkar also disqualified independent MLA Filipe Neri Rodrigues in a move to reduce the numbers in the Congress-camp. The Governor, S.C. Jamir, had to appoint Congress MLA Francisco Sardinha as the Pro-tem Speaker to enable Mr. Rane to prove the strength. However, the Rane Government was dismissed on March 4 and President's Rule was imposed even after the Government proved the majority.

To a query on the action taken by the Government after the terrorist attack on the Ram temple complex in Ayodhya, Mr. Rane said he was not aware of the details.
