PFI stages protest in Shimoga, terms demolition a blow to India’s secularism

Activists of the Popular Front of India (PFI) staged a protest in the city on Friday condemning the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in 1992.

Addressing the protest meet, president of the district unit of the organisation Shahid Khan said the demolition of masjid by the Hindutva activists dealt a huge blow to India’s secular fabric.

Claiming that the then government had prior information on the plan by Hindutva organisations to demolish the mosque, Mr. Khan said the ruling dispensation failed to take action to prevent the vandals and adequate security was not provided to the mosque. Demolition of the mosque was followed by well-orchestrated anti-Muslim riots throughout the country, he said.

‘Conspiracy’

The Liberhan Commission which probed the developments leading to the demolition has indicted top leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and held them responsible for the communal riots that took place during that period. It is evident that the demolition of the mosque and subsequent communal riots were part of a conspiracy hatched by the BJP for political gains, he said.

He urged the government to initiate stern action against the persons whom the Liberhan Commission has indicted in its report. The government should take initiatives to reconstruct the mosque at the demolished site and thereby strengthen social harmony.

PFI functionaries Aijaz Pasha, Abdul Mujeeb and Tabrez Khan took part in the protest.
