Yakshaganostava

MANGALORE AUG. 14. The Yakshaganotsava Committee will organise yakshagana programmes for 10 days in different parts of Dakshina Kannada from Tuesday. Addressing presspersons here today, the secretary of the committee, D. Manohar Kumar, said entry for the shows would be free. Episodes on "Abhimanyu-Gadha Parva", "Lava-Kusha" and "Shree Devi Leele" would be performed here on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. The "Vishnu Leele" episode would be stage at Kateel on August 20. He said "Bappanadu Kshetra Mahatme Prasanga" would be staged at Manila on August 21. "Shree Hari Leele" would be staged at Odiyur on August 22. And four episodes — "Daksha Yajna", "Shoorpanakha Manabhanga-Indrajitu Kalaga", "Sathwa Pareekshe" and "Krishanugraha" — would be performed at Puttur from August 23 to 26. Mr. Kumar said the committee would felicitate some senior yakshagana artistes of the Tenku Thittu style during the yakshaganotsava. The president of the committee, Padyana Ganapathi Bhat; the vice-president, Ambaprasad Pathala; and member and senior artiste Aruva Koragappa Shetty were present.

Theatre festival

MYSORE AUG. 14. The Department of Kannada and Culture, in association with J.S.S. Mahavidyapeetha and Taralabalu Samagama, will organise a children's theatre festival from August 17 at the Kalamandira here. Disclosing this to presspersons on Friday, the Deputy Director of the Department of Kannada and Culture, M.G. Sadanandaiah, said plays would be staged by the Taralabalu Kala Sangha, a group comprising 250 children from 40 schools. The children would participate in 12 plays during the festival. C.G. Krishnamurthy, theatre personality, would participate as a resource person. The Director of the department, Muddumohan, would inaugurate the festival. The Director of Rangayana, Chidambara Rao Jambe, would preside over the function. The Mayor, Dakshinamurthy, and Shivamurthy Shivakumaracharya Swamiji of Taralabalu Brihanmath would be present, he added.

Doctor's body found

BIJAPUR AUG. 14. The body of Prabhakar Shah, who was murdered along with his wife, Sudha, was found floating in the Krishna near Bidari village in the Babaleshwar police station limits today. The police said that search was on for the body of Sudha Shah. Meanwhile, the police took into custody four accomplices of the main accused, Prasad Ravindra Vishpute, who was arrested soon after the crime. In a swift operation, a police team took into custody three persons, including one from Jath in Maharashtra, in connection with the murder. The Bijapur rural police took another person into custody. While Dr. Shah's car was found in Belgaum, a jeep, which was reportedly used by the accused to dispose of the bodies, was found at Honwad near here. The accused abandoned the jeep after it met with an accident.

Circle in memory of Nittoor

TUMKUR AUG. 14. Residents of Nittur in Gubbi taluk of Tumkur district on Saturday proposed to the gram panchayat to name the main circle in the village after Nittoor Srinivasa Rau, former Chief Justice of the erstwhile High Court of Mysore. Ramakrishnaiah, President of the gram panchayat, said that he would accept the proposal.

Power theft

Bidar Aug. 14. The vigilance wing of the Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company raided houses and commercial establishments and detected theft of power worth Rs. 1.54 lakhs in Bidar district recently. Officials of the vigilance wing filed 13 cases in this regard at Basavakalyan, Chitta, Uchalamba, Betbelkunda, Gour, Belur and Dhannur villages.

Congress issues whip

TUMKUR AUG. 14. The President of the Tumkur District Congress Committee, S.P. Muddahanume Gowda, on Saturday issued a whip to the Congress members in the Tumkur Zilla Panchayat to vote in favour of the no-confidence motion against S.R. Shantala, President of the panchayat. A special meeting of the panchayat will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. to take up the no-confidence motion. Mr. Muddahanume Gowda told presspersons the party had the required strength in the panchayat to unseat Ms. Shantala. He had warned the members that action would be taken against them if they violated the party whip. "They will lose their membership of the panchayat as per the rules,'' he added.
