Four farmers commit suicide

SHIMOGA Aug. 26. Four farmers — two in Shimoga district and one each in Tumkur and Kodagu districts — reportedly committed suicide in the State in the past couple of days.

Neelakanthappa (45) and his son Shivu (18), farmers from Madikecheeluru, near Shimoga, committed suicide by consuming poison as they were unable to repay agricultural loans.

In Pavagada taluk in Tumkur district, a farmer, Gollara Eranna (38) of Kadirenahalli reportedly consumed pesticide on Monday night.

A farmer committed suicide at Nallur village in Shirangala Gram Panchayat limits in Somwarpet taluk of Kodagu district, apparently as he could not repay loans taken from cooperative banks. This is reportedly the first case of its kind in the district.

The farmer, whose body was recovered from a well on Monday evening, was identified as Appanna (35).
