Former MLA laid to rest

BELGAUM: The last rites of Shankar Hanmanthappa Karning (79), former MLA, were performed at his native village, Konnur, on Thursday. Workers of Gokak Mills and other factories were also present.

Prominent among those who paid their last respect to the departed soul included Ramesh Jarkiholi and Bhalchandra Jarkiholi, MLAs; Laxman Jarkiholi, founder of Hukkeri Laxmi Education Trust; and M.L. Muttennavar, former MLA. Many people recalled the services of Mr. Karning in leading a struggle to get justice for Gokak Mills workers.

Former MLC dies

Former MLC B.A. Bolshetty (80) died in his native village Udakeri in Bailhongal taluk on Wednesday.

The last rites were held on Thursday. He is survived by his wife, two sons and four daughters.

Mr. Bolshetty was elected to the State Legislative Assembly from Bailhongal in 1967 and later entered the Upper House in 1972.
