Five CPI(M) workers arrested

THALASSERY: Five Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers were arrested in raids conducted by the police to nab those involved in the incident of stone-throwing on a police party and the Dharmadom police station here during a protest march to the office of the Deputy Superintendent of Police last week.

The police said the arrested had been accused in the cases in connection with the violent incidents during the march.

The arrested have been identified as Vazhayil Lineesh, 24, K.C. Chandran, 44, both from Vayalalam here, A.K. Shaji, 26, P.K. Subair, 23, and Shibin, 25, from Temple Gate here.

The police said the five accused had been arrested in raids conducted at Vayalalam and Temple Gate areas late on Sunday night.

The police had registered cases against more than 2,000 CPI(M) workers, including CPI(M) State committee member P. Sasi and area secretary Karayi Rajan, in connection with the attack on the police on November 7 when the protest march turned violent, leaving several police personnel, including Superintendent of Police Mathew Polycarp, injured.
