`End discontent among individuals'

Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: Retired Lieutenant General D.B. Shekatkar has said that conflicts within individuals are the prime reason for increasing threat to national security.

Delivering a lecture on "National security", organised jointly by Poorva Sainik Seva Parishat and Hindustan Samachar, here on Sunday, he said that making people develop concern for their motherland would go a long way in making the country secure.

With the advancement in science and technology, the concept of security had changed over years.

It was foolish to think that the country was safe if the borders were secure. Security of the individual was crucial for national security, he said.

Various reasons lead to discontent among individuals, which in turn proved a threat to national security. Sixty-eight countries across the world were facing a threat to their national security because of discontent. To overcome the problem, discontent among individuals should be removed, Mr. Shekatkar said.

Presiding over the function, A.S. Subramanya, professor, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, said unrest had become a global phenomenon. Globalisation and liberalisation had an adverse impact on developing nations, he said.

Later, Mr. Shekatkar held an interaction with NCC cadets, ex- servicemen and journalism students. State president of the parishat Major S.S. Galagali, was present.
