`Ambedkar wrongly projected as a Dalit leader alone' Mayor urged to install statue using MCC's general funds

MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada district unit of the Karnataka Dalit Sangharsh Samiti (DSS) has urged Mayor Vijaya Arun to install a statue of Dalit leader B.R. Ambedkar in the city. DSS members under the leadership of samiti divisional convener Rohithaksha K. staged a function at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Circle here in the heart of the city on Wednesday and garlanded a cutout of the leader.

In a memorandum addressed to the Mayor, Mr. Rohithaksha and samiti district convener S.P. Anand said that there were statues of Dr. Ambedkar in all districts of the State except Dakshina Kannada.

They said the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) had agreed to a request from the samiti to rename the circle at Jyothi talkies after the Dalit leader, and had also installed a big plaque in honour of the leader.

Stating that Dr. Ambedkar was being wrongly projected as a leader of the Dalits alone, although he had striven for the uplift of all weaker and downtrodden sections of society, the samiti leaders said that the only way to honour him would be to install a life-size statue of him.
