‘Divest books of copyrights’

August 07, 2013 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - Mysore:

U.B. Pavanaja of CIS, Bangalore, has mooted the idea to divest government-funded publications in Kannada of copyrights so as to make it fit to be published on Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Licence. (Copyrighted material cannot be published on Wikipedia)

“Though the University of Mysore published the multi-volume Kannada Vishwakosha, it is confined only to libraries and inaccessible to the public. Since the work is government-funded and the contributors have also been paid for their efforts, the University of Mysore should think of divesting such publications of copyrights so that it can be instantly uploaded and published on Wikipedia. Not only will the number of Kannada entries grow phenomenally, the quality of the content will be unsurpassed while it will also be accessible to public which is not the case at present,” he added.
