Dharam Singh urged to intercede

HASSAN: The Minister for Information, B. Shivaram, has accused the Minister for Public Works and Energy, H.D. Revanna, of supporting corrupt officers in the district and urged the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to inquire in to the matter. Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, he said that though he had brought the issue to the notice of Mr. Singh, the situation has not changed.

The Janata Dal (Secular) has been making attempts to crush the Congress in the district from the day the coalition Government was formed in the State. The arrogance of JD(S) workers in Gandsi and Arsikere constituencies forced Congress workers to take to the streets in Arsikere on Monday. They blocked roads and staged a dharna to protest against the high-handedness of the JD(S) workers, he said.

Mr. Shivaram alleged that though JD(S) workers recently took away transformers from the office of the Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) in Arsikere, the authorities concerned had not taken any action so far. After a lot of persuasion, the Superintending Engineer, MESCOM, assured to lodge a complaint with the police, he said.

He accused the MESCOM authorities of discriminating against constituencies represented by Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators in the allotment of transformers.

The illegal power connection taken by a JD(S) worker in Soppinahalli village in Gandsi constituency resulted in the death of Virayayya, 30. Though the police filed a First Information Reports (FIR), no action has been taken against the accused, he said.

Officials in the Public Works Department have not paid the bills of contractors for the Ashraya houses constructed in Hassan and Arsikere taluks. Though the issue was brought to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner, no action has been taken in this regard, Mr Shivaram said.
