The Federation of Dalit Organisations has accused Gulbarga district Deputy Commissioner R. Vishal of pursuing anti-Dalit policies and not taking concrete steps to prevent recurring incidents of atrocities on the community.

Members of the federation staged a demonstration here and demanded the transfer of Mr. Vishal from the district. They marched to the Deputy Commissioner's office, shouting slogans against the Deputy Commissioner for his alleged anti-Dalit stance.

In a memorandum addressed to Governor H.R. Bhardwaj and submitted to the district authorities, the Dalit leaders said the district administration had failed to prevent the increasing cases of atrocities against Dalits in the district. They said the Deputy Commissioner had neither paid a customary visit to the victims of atrocities nor had he provided compensation to them.

The failure on the part of the Deputy Commissioner to deal with the perpetrators of attacks on Dalits firmly had only emboldened vested elements, they said.

They referred to the attack on Dalit youth, Kiran Jadhav, on July 17, by a group of persons led by the former Opposition leader in the city corporation, Vijaykumar Sevalani. Although the police belatedly filed a case of attempt to murder, the accused had not yet been arrested.

The federation accused the Deputy Commissioner of foisting false cases against those who questioned his acts.
