AssurancesGovernment will expedite Varahi Irrigation Project Steps to be taken to widen Udupi-Manipal Road

Udupi: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Saturday directed the district police to make concerted efforts to curb naxalite activities. He was speaking at the review meeting of Government departments at DC Office here.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said that the police should not take action just for the sake of it. He will discuss the matter in detail with top-level police officials shortly. When Kundapur MLA H. Srinivas Shetty said that there is discrimination in allotment of funds to naxalite-affected areas, the Chief Minister said that all development activities should be implemented without any political consideration.

Karkala MLA Sunil Kumar said nearly 260 families at Chara near Hebri faced displacement for the mistake committed by the Revenue Department. Some years back, title deeds were given to the poor people there to build houses. Now the department says that the land belongs to the Forest Department and the people have been asked to leave.

Assistant Commissioner Madan Naik said it was a mistake of the department as the land belonged to the Wildlife Division. Deputy Commissioner Incharge R. Shantaraj said one of the main problems facing the district is sea erosion. There is need for subsidised kerosene and diesel for fishermen, widening of State Highways and Zilla Panchayat roads and construction of the District Offices Complex and the Zilla Panchayat Office. Tourism has a lot of potential in the district. A police sub-division is required at Kundapur.

Another visit likely

Mr. Kumaraswamy said that he will visit the district for two days in April to discuss problems faced by the district. The Government is committed to expediting the Varahi Irrigation Project to revive the Brahmavar Sugar Factory. He directed officials to take immediate steps to start widening of Udupi-Manipal Road.
