Congress wins top posts in Raichur, Kodagu ZPs

Raichur Nov. 13. Doddabassappa Gouda and Sushilamma of the Congress were elected President and Vice-President, respectively, of the Raichur Zilla Panchayat today.

The Congress has 22 seats in the 29-member zilla panchayat. However, the party leaders had difficulty selecting the candidates as the posts were reserved for the general category. However, the leaders, including A. Venkatesh Naik, MP and DCC President, Raja Amareshwara Naik, Minister in charge of the district, and N.S. Bose Raju, Manvi MLA and Chairman of the Hyderabad Karnataka Development Board, decided to field Mr. Gouda from Hirekotinkal, and Ms. Sushilamma from Kalmala. The election process began around 11 a.m. at Craft Hall here. Only two nominations were filed — those of Mr. Gouda and Ms. Sushilamma — for the posts of President and Vice-President, respectively. G.N. Nayak, Deputy Commissioner, announced the results of the election. Narayanaswamy, Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, and P. Harisekaran, Superintendent of Police, were present. Addressing presspersons, Mr. Gouda said that he would give priority to completing projects, and construction of latrines in gram panchayats would be speeded up.
