A.K. Antony to review functioning of ministers

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Having completed 16 months in office in partnership with the Janata Dal (Secular), the Congress is now ready with a report card on the performance of its ministers and their departments. The hits and misses in the party's commitment to the Common Minimum Programme and the way ahead to achieve complete compliance will be the main focus of All-India Congress Committee General Secretary A.K. Antony's visit to Bangalore on Friday.

Appointments to boards

N.S. Boseraju, Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, told presspersons here on Thursday that as promised by Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh, the process of appointment of chairmen of 114 boards and corporations will be completed in October. The Government is not dithering on the appointments. I

n fact, while the governments in the past were wont to keep the issue on the backburner for years, it is for the first time that fresh appointments are being made within 60 days of the incumbents submitting their resignations.

He said 60 of the corporations are doing very well financially, and it is to the credit of the Government that the chairmen have not been removed till now.

The Congress and the JD(S) will share the appointments on a 50-50 basis, just as the Cabinet berths have been shared equally, he said.

The Government has constituted taluk-level vigilance committees headed by the MLAs concerned to monitor the functioning of various local committees and oversee the implementation of developmental activities under State-sponsored schemes. They include the Aradhana committees and the Akrama-Sakrama committees (for regularisation of encroachments), which will now also have MLCs as members, Mr. Boseraju said.

The Chief Minister will provide details of the performance of the departments under JD(S) ministers to Mr. Antony, he said, adding that he assumed that those ministers have furnished details so that a comprehensive assessment can be made.
